Carrum women take on the World! Masters Games in New Zealand
With the Closing Ceremony now over, the Auckland 2017 World Masters Games was one of the most successful and largest World Masters Games, with over 27,000 athletes competing. Seven Carrum women, and one former Carrum athlete took up the challenge and flew to New Zealand for a fantastic week of tough racing and crew-bonding.
The girls got a chance to test out their hired boats and the absolutely wonderful scenery at Lake Karapiro in the days before the regatta began.
First up was our women's A double of Lisa and Erin who started out nicely with a promising 2nd in their heat. As the only Australian crew in the final the girls finished an amazing 6th place in the final!
Next was our women's E double of Dagmar and Mary, who had a solid row and narrowly missed out on a prized spot in the final.
Day two saw the amazing weather continue for our women's D quad (Fiona, Mishelle, Dagmar and Mary) who had a strong heat and managed a 6th place in the semi-final, missing out on a finals berth. A trip to Hobbiton was the best way to recover for the next day of racing.
The ever brave Fiona took on day 3 of racing with her second ever race in a single scull (in what was probably the skinniest boat any of us have seen!), and was then joined by the other 7 lades (Jacquie, Lisa, Mishelle, Erin, Dagmar, Mary and Lynne) in the afternoon for our women's C eight, which had a strong row into the final finishing 8th in the world. A great effort!
The final day of racing saw Jacquie and Fiona take on the women's B double event who placed 6th in the very tightly contested final (under a second separating 4th, 5th and 6th place)! The girls posted a PB final time and were the only Aussies to make it through to the final.
Our final event of the regatta was the women's B quad of Jacquie, Fiona, Lisa and Erin who placed second in their heat and then took a further 8 seconds off their time in the final to place an impressive 4th.
A huge congratulations to everyone that participated on a very successful international regatta, with FOUR top-eight placings overall, we couldn't be prouder and cannot wait to see what they can produce at the Victorian Masters State Championships and the Australian Masters National Championships in May.
