Carrum took on 250 other eights along the prestigious 8.6km race along the Yarra River. The event is Australia's largest head-race, with crews from all over Australia and overseas vying for Yarra glory. Our women entered the D8+ divison, and despite starting the head-race in last position, the crew of Fiona, Jacquie, Sara, Lisa, Mishelle, Jess, Helen and Mary, coxed by Mario, were quick to overtake many crews and settle into the race plan rhythm.
The crew crossed the line in a winning time of 32 minutes 15 seconds. It is the first time in recent memory that Carrum RC has entered a women's eight in this prestigious event.
The club is absolutely thrilled with the crew's success. A number of other Carrum members also experienced the great race competing in composite masters crews, and coxing some interstate clubs in what is sometimes referred to as the tricky "coxwain's race".
The win was reported in the Mordialloc Chelsea Leader newspaper (above) and also celebrated by the namesake of the winning boat, and our land-fitness coach Neville Smith!
This will be a day for the Carrum Rowing Club history books!
